dents in 29 gage metal

I have two black walnut trees with branches overhanging the gararge size barn I plan on putting metal roofing on. Is 29 gage acceptable to keep the falling walnuts from denting it? Should I even be concerned if the roof does get dented? I can always cut the tress down if needed.

Hi Jim, Thanks for your question about metal roofing. It is certainly possible for a walnut to fall on 29 ga metal roofing and leave a dent. The walnut would have to drop a significant distance to have the energy to dent the metal. From my experience, dents in the roof from falling objects (nuts, hail...) typically only cause aesthetic damage, not functional damage. The metal panel will continue to function. Further, such impacts do not typically damage the protective coatings. Regards, David Stermer David Stermer
