Venting Metal Roof

Return to Installation

Return to Forum

Hello, My question is regarding if it is necessary to vent a metal roof. I have been researching this and have seen answers on both ends. The construction that my question derives from is this: 4/12 roof pitch with 2x6 rafters total length of 8'-0", osb sheathing, then felt paper, then 3/4" foam board, then 2x4 purlins running perpendicular to rafters 2' o.c. and finally classic rib metal roof. The entire building has continuous vented soffit throughout (including rakes) and plywood has been cut short of ridge for venting. Foam closures installed both at eaves and ridge cap. Is there adequate ventilation provided without the install of ridge vent?

You should have an actual vented ridge or else the other ventilation will not work. Todd Miller

You do not need battens though if you do not have any ventilation, I'd like to talk with you and discuss one possible risk of all of this. I can be reached at 1-800-543-8938 ext 201. Todd Miller

Sorry didn't get back to u sooner, but what kind of ventilation are you referring to. The roof is a sloped roof, it has a parapet wall around whole building, parapet is 8" on far end and 54" at bottom end of roof with a 6x6 recessed gutter system that drains to a metal gutter system down building the building roof area is 60' long by 28.8' wide inside parapet. I am putting top cap over top of parapet with panels running down to a water diverter (flashing) that goes behind wall panels and on top of sloped roof panels. The ends will be open at top of slope (behind vertical panels) and open at bottom before running in to recessed gutter system.
