TOPIC: I Have An Existing Metal Roof and Have A Question

side porch added to chalet

I have a chalet style log home with a 12 on 12 green steel roof. The model is a Valcour Island Lincoln Log Home. I want to add a side porch 8 feet wide along the side of the house with a steel roof. How would I connect the steel roof of the porch to the roof of the house? The angle of the porch roof requires some angle to allow the substantial snow load to slide off in winter. The roof is the r panel style vertical roofing .

Kevin, Thanks for the question. I assume that the slope of the porch roof will be at a flatter slope than the main roof. If this is true, the manufacturer of the steel roof should have a detail for the slope change. This will use a simple piece of trim with a break in it to allow the upslope edge to fit under the main roof panels and the other edge will lie on top of the porch panels. The gaps between the panels and the trim are commonly filled in with closure strips and tape sealant. If the slopes are the same, and the roofs are in the same plane, the panels can just be end lapped with tape sealant in between, assuming the panel profiles match. Again, the manufacturer should be able to provide a detail for this. Good luck, David Stermer David Stermer
