TOPIC: I Have An Existing Metal Roof and Have A Question

American metal Shingles

I am the second owner of a Craftsman Bungalow. The previous owner installed a metal roof in 1976. The roof was Manufactured by American Metal Roof Tiles Inc and installed by Interstate Aluminum Sales & Service Inc. both from the same address in Allentown PA. The roof has a 40 year Guarantee but i did a search and could not find anything on either company. The green paint on the roof has been in bad shape for many years. Many of the snow stops have been broken off as well. The metal of the roof is very thin and I do not see anyway to climb up on this roof to do any painting or maintenance. There is a spot by the one end were the gutter is that has been pushed in most likely by someones hand. is there anyway I can get up on this roof to paint it or is it not worth it and I should consider buying a new roof?

Brian, I believe that I am a little bit familiar with this product. The manufacturer is no longer in business and I think that the tooling for the roof shingles is now owned by Berridge Manufacturing. Chances are it can be repainted. Is there any chance that you could email me pictures of the home and roof and I can reply with a more definitive response and suggestions? My email is [email protected] Todd Miller

This is the only picture I have on the computer but i can take othesr if needed. I forgot to mention one of the plumbing vent pipes leaks at times into the house when it rains hard. There is not roofing flashing around at the bottom by the roof. There is roof tar and I can see it is crack but I can not reach it on a ladder and am afraid I will crush the roof it I climb on it.

It is possible to walk these roofs but you must walk on the upper half of the panels. Additionally, to do extensive work on the roof, plywood or foam or walkboards can be placed on the roof as staging. The painting could perhaps be done from a bucket truck. If the paint has simply chalked and worn away, it can likely be repainted. There are contractors out your way accustomed to working on these roofs. If you'd like for me to connect you with one, please email me direct at [email protected] Todd Miller

It can be walked. You need to just step on the lock section of the panel and not across the middle span. Eric Novotny
