Is a metal roof suitable for a cottage? We were told not to use metal as the building was not square but someone else said this is corrected by using shims? The cottage had settled along 2 sides but will be levelled before the new roof is put on. Can we go ahead with a metal roof.

There is a differance between square and level and there are all type of metal systems to deal with both situations.
If the roof has sags in it there is a structural deficiency that should be fixed. At least make enough corrections to stop it from moving farther.
Then choose a metal system that is designed to be installed on strapping. This way you can use the strapping to shim up the roof and level out the roof plain.
Then look at the squareness of the roof. Measure corner to corner of each roof plain. This will help determine what adjustments need to be made in installing a metal roof to compensate. If it is out minimally you can use a vertical rib panel. Use a wide simple profile and balance the cuts at each side so that the taper on the sheets is not noticeable.
If the roof is farther out of square choose a random busy pattern such as a wood shake or shingle replica. This will hide most differances in the roof.
On the side we make a couple of metal roof systems like this both DIY and Premium. Check our web sites at Duraloc.com and Americanroofingiindustries.com alomg with a couple of our other fellow members who make similar type products.
Hope this helps
