I have a standing seam roof, about 70+ yrs, stamped N B Handy on metal sheets, 12x18". It was very nicely put together on open area, staggered joints, etc. But the chimney flashings were leaking. I pulled the flashing off and saw that under 1"tar that the metal was folded up 1 1/2" at brick but never soldered or any other way to shed water from opening. the flashing lapped over flat metal and was nailed and tar over all this. Can't get the only co in town to fool with these two holes. Unfortunately, its almost impossoble to get any solder to fill gaps in new tin/(terne?) I've fitted onto the corners (then flashing cut into brick work overlapping turned up metal). I'd rather pay a professional but this stuff is so archaic that no one wants to fix it. Where and what type solder can I get to fix this correctly. I did get the sleeve for soil stack soldered together from new material, but soldering to roof required screwing it down flat and half a can of flux,and very very sensitive to temp of metal. Thankyou

I can help you along a little. I would try an established sheet metal shop. It appears as if you understand the flashing detail required. My father was skilled at soldering and had a set of irons for this purpose. Basically you heated the irons and ran the along the seam to melt in the solder. Possibly the sheet metal shop can help you. If you have no luck this way, contact me directly and I will see if we haev any experienced roofers near you. Good Luck.

Thank you for your reply. I've tried to find a contractor again hoping things have slowed down this time of year. One said they would show up Thurs or Fri, but no word yet on estimate. He said he intended to use caulk to attach metal to face of brick when I asked about that detail. If he is willing to do the solder/cutting in detail I would be glad to have him take care of the roof.
