standing seam over sips

We are using sips on new construction & standing lock metal. Do we need to strip the panels first or can we simply go on the wood surface with or without felt? If stripping is recommended should we go vertical & horizontal?

I apologize for not answering sooner. As long as the SIPs are installed so that moisture cannot penetrate them, you will be okay with underlayment and no stripping. Todd Miller

Check with the panel supplier. In most SIP applications, you can go direct to deck. Underlayment is cheap and it will protect the underside of the panel from any abrasions it might get from the rough edges of the panel or fastener heads. I prefer synthetic with all metal applications because it is a complete vapor barrier (non breathable style) and prevents any sun driven moisture from the panel. You should not require any venting with a properly installed and sealed SIP roof, however, if you are not sure, above deck venting is cheap insurance. Eric Novotny
