Metal Roof Coatings

I live in a 100+ year old Edwardian townhome in the historic district of Capitol Hill. Our home has the original Terne standing seam metal roof and I am tired of cajoling my husband into painting it every 5 years. I would really like to find a contractor in my area who is familiar with Kynar/Hylar coatings for older meal roofs. I read about the Kynar/Hylar finishes in the March edition of FIne Homebuilding. Help!!!!!

Hi Karen, Have you tried the Find A Contractor section of this website? Another option is to use this website to find products you like and then contact the manufacturers to see who they suggest as far as experienced contractors in your area. Thanks so much. Todd Miller

We can take a look at it if you like. We are booked out a little bit right now though if it is an emergency type service. Eric Novotny

I have calls in at The Garland Company, United Coatings and APV Engineering and no one on the sale teams at these companies can get back to me to tell me if a Kynar/Hylar product will work for my roof. Someone from United Coatings recommended an application of Hydro Stop at about $5.00 per square foot ( finished price including prep ) which is not in our price range. We have been using Follansbee's Terne II RapiDri water-based acrylic roof paint for the last 15 years. Great paint, just tiring of the 3-5 year painting cyle and looking for something with a longer life. So far, no one has been able to tell me if a Kynar/Hylar product can be used on an old roof that has been previously painted with an acrylic water-based roof paint.

Air dry kynars are unusual due to expense and difficulty in obtaining them. They can be applied over what you have and I would suggest a primer be used first. They still though will adhere only as well as your bottom layer of paint currently is adhered. Todd Miller

FInally received a call back from a sales rep at United Coatings that verified what you stated above. Sadly, their products are only packaged in 10 gallon sizes and as we only need about 5-6 gallons of primer and top coat, my husband got tired of my searching, went to ABC and finished the roof this weekend. Thank you for you help. Will think about a Kynar air dry products again in 3 years.

will any of the coatings seal around the crews and small cracks in the seams when you paint?

Paint finishes will not do that. There are some rubberized coatings which will. You can also sometimes seal cracks with something else and then paint over it. Todd Miller
