TOPIC: I Have An Existing Metal Roof and Have A Question

foam insulation on deck of old tin

I have a very old tin roof which is not leaking yet. It was coated with aluminum several years ago. I want to add insulation and seal up this old house and use open cell insulation on the back of the roof deck. Are there any issues I should be concerned about?

That sounds like a reasonable plan based upon what you have said. You do want to make sure the roof is leakproof of course. Todd Miller

As soon as you spray the roof deck, you are married to that roof because the foam will be bonded to it. You need to absolutely make sure that it is solid and going to be leakproof for life. If you have concerns about the roof, I would rip down rigid foam and put it as a blocker between the roof rafters and spray to that. This way the roof could be replaced in the future without trashing the foam. You might also incorporate the foam to have a sort of under roof venting to help with the efficiency depending on how you tie the foam into the eaves. Eric Novotny

Mserna, I am generally not a fan of such installations but it can be done with some products. Consult with your roofing manufacturer for details. Todd Miller

In most cases, yes. +1 on consulting with the roof manufacturer and abiding by their guidelines. Eric Novotny
