TOPIC: Is A Metal Roof Right For My House

Pine trees above metal roof

8/19/11 We have a 3 season cabin in northern Wis. It is closed up and power off for 7 months of the year. There is no soffit venting possible. We have several very large pine trees 6 ft from the cabin and a lot of pine needles that need to be swept off the shingled roof each year. It is very wooded and shaded, thus we have small patches of moss on the shingled roof. I sweep that off each year also. Would you recommend a metal or good grade shingle roof replacement? Will pine needle pitch eat away at the metal roof paint? Thank you.

Provided you use a product with a good paint finish (I would suggest something that meets the Premium criteria of the Metal Construction Association Certified Metal Roofing program), the pine needles will not be damaging. Please realize that they do carry sap though and that sap will transfer to the roof and could hold dirt and could also even support biological growth over time. Todd Miller

+1 Food source + moisture = Moss growth. The metal roof will certainly shed the needles better and is completely non-absorptive to water, however, the sap may provide enough adhesion to stick to the roof. Eric Novotny

I am considering a gaco silicone coating for 12 year old metal roof under large live oak trees. There is a constant stream of leaves, pollen, acorns, etc at various times of the year. The metal is in good condition but a dark residue is making it ugly. I want to know if the product gaco is a a good choice to first seal water I live in Louisiana, and look better over the years than just cleaning the roof. Thanks.Note there is no rust on the metal roof.

I am not sure a coating is the answer here. Do you know who the panel manufacturer is so that you could consult with them on approved cleaning methods? Eric Novotny

I,m considering replacing shingle roof with metal roof. I live in south Florida about 3 miles from cost. Main roof is shingle with 3-12 pitch & with low slop addition on back of house has roll type roofing, also have large Royal Poinciana tree over hanging front of house at sheds all year long. (leafs, flowers , sticks and seed pods) Roof has been replaced at least 3-4 times. Can metal roof be installed on main roof & back addition. Thanks Donald

Donald, yes, there are metal roofs that can be installed on lower pitch roofs. For roofs of 2:12 or lower pitch, it needs to be a mechanically seamed standing seam roof. Todd Miller
