Is there any cut out and attach products to patch old nail holes in an older building. I understand I could use screws with caulk but one time seen some plugs that could be used.

If you just need to fix a hole where an old lead head nail no longer holds then you can buy screws with washers of larger diameter shanks say #12 or #14 that will bite into the wood and hold tight. If you have holes in no mans area of the metal sheet there are some companies that manufacturer a repair tape and brush over protection system for that. Contact a local commercial pre engineered contractor to help source this. If it is Galvanized sheet and you want a neat permenant fix, then then sand around the hole, place a piece of Galvaized metal behind it and solder the hole shut.

I would really like to find the "repair tape" that is made for repairing galvanized roofing holes. I live in a rural area and have asked about such a product but only get a blank stare. any suggestions?

Look up one of the metal magazines such as metalmag.com, moderntrade.com or metalroofing.com and get a list of their advertisers. If you can't pick one out, leave an inquiry and I'm sure they will plug you in. If that does not work go to a roofing distributor and ask for some self adhesive EPDM tape.
