MetroShake II installation / noise factor

Hello, I'm considering having MetroShake II installed in my 1940s, single story, hot southern California house. I'm concerned about the correct way to install these shakes and the noise factor of rain, etc. The contractor has proposed installing the shakes over 2 layers of 30 lb felt, no plywood or anything. There will be spaces in the wood paneling underneath the felt (don't know the correct terminology, sorry). Will that be sufficient insulation and will it deaden the pinging from the rain? Any different suggestions regarding the installation? Thanks!
