I have a contractor doing a standing seam roof for us. Our siding is white and we were thinking about a light gray roof. How much difference in heat reflection will I see from a darker roof compared to a lighter one. Should I stay with lighter colors?

A lighter color will reflect more of the sun's energy and keep the upper floors cooler. How much cooler depends on what your attic insulation, structure, and home design are. If you are in an area that gets plenty of summer heat, a cooler roof is advantageous.

The roofing manufacturer should be able to provide the reflectance of each color. This number determines whether the product qualifies for the federal energy credit. Edward
