What precautions are needed to protect a metal roof from lightning? Is lightning attracted to a metal roof?

Metal conducts electricity. It does not "draw" it. Lightning chooses the path of least resistance, meaning it hits the highest object in the area. It will select the highest object, regardless of that object's composition. Should a metal roof get hit, in most cases, if plumbing stacks, etc., are all up to code, there is nothing that would conduct the charge into the house. There are numerous studies, etc. showing that metal roofing poses no increased risk in regards to lightning. However, like any roof, lightning protection can be installed by a qualified expert in that field if so desired by the property owner. Todd Miller
