underlayment necessary with purlins

Guest User
considering a new metal roof over 1 layer of old 3 tab shingles. spoke with the contractor about underlayment and his plans are to lay a 2x4 purlins grid ontop of the old shingles and attach metal to that. i asked if underlayment was necessary due to moisture and he said there would be none. They would use that in more of a pole barn scenario. he is a qualified metal roofer but if im gonna spend the money i want to make sure the product will last like it is supposed to

I personally would suggest a layer of underlayment before the purlins.
