Metal to shingle transition at ridge

Small cape style house. We decided to put standard asphalt shingles on the front and standing seam metal roof on the back. Metal was chosen for the back because of occasional ice dams when it shows. Primary reason for not going all metal was cost. What is the best way to transition from shingle to metal at the ridge? The two options we have from the contractor are to have metal overlap the shingle or shingle overlap the metal. I'm leaning towards metal at the ridge. Any comments, suggestions, or concerns I should have about this selection? Thanks

I would use a metal cap. You do not want to have a failure at the ridge that could jeopardize the standing seam Todd Miller

Todd Miller, I want to add a screened area to the rear of my house. Going to use metal, which will meet exhisting shingle roof at the facia. What or how do I make a seal from the shingles to metal at the facia. Help. John Savasta
