Solar panels and Metal Roofing

I was wondering if it is possible to install solar panels on top of metal roofing if that defeats the purpose of getting the metal roofing all together?

Not sure why that would defeat the purpose but yes traditional PV panels can be mounted on metal roofs and some metal roofs also have the option of thin film PV laminates.
