We have a house with no atic. The rafters are the ceiling for the house with shingles on top of the rafters. We had about 4 trees drop (either whole trees or tree limbs)on the house so we had the trees removed, which was a big mistake because the temperture in the summer increased inside by about 10 degrees. Ideas that we had: 4-3 inch styrofoam sheets on top of shingles then add a white reflective metal roof and add a large fan to circulate air. Does anyone have any suggestions? Are the syrofoam sheets ok?

This will help and, if you do not have any condensation issues now, I do not believe this will create any. However, if you could add a vented airspace to your assembly, it would be very helpful at protecting against condensation problems as well as at carrying away excessive heat. Todd Miller

Janet, Check out ISO board if you are trying to gain R value. Polyisocyanurate has a much better R value but also comes at a much steeper price, but well worth it when things are done right. Mathews Roofing Texas

Todd, Thanks very much for your response. How would we create a vented airspace? Elevate the styrofoam on a 2 inch strip? Thanks again, Janet

If you're willing to do all of that, you might also consider tearing off the roofing down to the rafters and insulating with spray polyurethane foam.
