I want to put a metal roof on my home. The existing pitch is 3 x 12 on the front and a shed 1 1/2 x 12 pitch on the back. I want to intall new trusses, decking and a metal roof with a 4 x 12 pitch on both the front and back. 1. would I have to remove all of the old roof, decking and all or could I just open up the top 4 ft ? 2. Would the contractor put down new decking and then the metal on top of it ?

Number one really is a framing question. I am not sure I can answer it though I will say that somewhere you need ventilation, in both the old and new attic chambers, or the joint chamber. As far as decking ... that varies according to your roof selection. Some require decking and others do not. In this sort of job, though, if you do not use decking, it will increase the need for ventilation in my opinion. Todd Miller
