Nervous about installing metal roof

I had nightmare roof problems in my other house (tiled roof, Florida weather), so after more than $60 in repairs and a new roof; our new house now has roof leaks. Repairs didn't work so I'm considering a metal roof. House is southern creole style w/ dormer windows. I see a lot of metal roofs near the water areas of Alabama but I'm concerned about how well they do in this area b/c of high winds we get and the high volumes of rain. Relatives are discouraging me from the metal roof b/c of "the noise" but I'm hoping a metal roof will outlast traditional shingles. My question: do you have any info re avg sq ft pricing of a metal roof installation, dealing with the noise from rainstorms, and a stats re leakage in metal roofs vs shingle roofs?

Correction, repairs were $60K, not $60.

TC, You will need to get local contractors to price your roof. I would be comfortable with a metal roof if it is fastened properly. If you have a solid deck and a well insulated attic, you will not notice any more noise than a shingle roof when you are inside your home. [email protected]

I have to ask- A metal roof lasts 3 times as long as other roofing materials??-- Where did you get this information?? Sorry to hijack this thread but I read this here on this site http://www.metalroofing.com/v2/content/news/metalroofing101_presentation.cfm --- and it has got to be a joke?? If you are going to make statements like this please back it up with hard facts. I would back a tile roof against any metal roof. And the best you will get is slate.

Dave, I would probably say "most" other other roofing materials. I am not an expert on slate roofs. I can tell you this fact. I have two metal roofs - one is 33 years old and the other is 30 years old. I put them both on myself so I know for sure how old they are. Both look like they can go another 30 plus years. Don't know if I will last that long but I don't think they will need replacing in my lifetime.
