I am concerned about a roof being installed for me in Denver that is showing lots of oil canning. It is a mansard roof so the sun reflects down to street level regularly greatly highlighting the oil canning. Can oil canning be avoided by going to a lower guage metal? It is currently 24g standing seam and I am concerned it is not an appropriate material for this application.

If you go to www.metalconstruction.org there is a Technical Bulletin on oilcanning which you may find to be of help. Oilcanning is oftentimes the result of something very different than just gauge. Todd Miller

I am also in the process of having a standing seam metal roof installed and am having issues with oil canning. I am wondering whether this is a function of faulty installation, guage or something else entirely. I have asked the roofers to stop until this is resolved. Any suggestions as to how to proceed? p.s. I live in Colorado Springs and my roof is quite steep in places.

standing seam metal roofing requires installation practices that allow it to contract and expand. In some areas, temperature differences can span from-30 degrees to +120. A clip system helps avoid a lot of this oil-canning, but eventually, a roof that oil cans will wear thru around the fasteners.

@ [email protected] Not sure where you got the information that oil cans will wear through, but from every study and literature I've seen that was not at all the case. Oil canning is a visual issue, not a performance or longivity issue.

There are numerous industry statements by manufacturers and associations that oilcanning is not reason for rejection. Todd Miller

I am aware of this. I do not intend to lose this law suit. My question is do you know of an attorney or legal resource with experience in these matters.
