I assume that since metal roofs are installed in panels rather than by individual shingles (as shakes or tiles would be), there is a difference in the amount of time needed to install the roof. Just how much of a time difference would there be, if any? Thank you.

The different styles of metal roofing come in different panel sizes. They also have different flashing methods. For a very simple roof using through-fastened vertically seamed metal panels, the installation will be a bit faster. For many situations, it will be about the same and, for complex roofs and some of the more specialized metal roofs, installation will take longer. One thing to keep in mind is that, though you do use some sealants with metal roofing, you still like to use precise flashings and accessories rather than "goop" in some sealant for watertightness. You can get by with roofing mastic and other sealants on standard roofing because they will last the life of the standard shingles. That is not the case with metal roofing though. Todd Miller

Thanks for your answer, Todd. It clarifies my thinking about metal roofs, and even installing roofs in general.
