Have a shallow 2nd story part of the roof with aluminum shingles, and ice dams starting to cause problems. It's all but impossible to be effective with a roof rake, due to the slope and a treeline getting in the way. Will rock salt or calcium chloride damage aluminum shingles? I know it'd be bad for steel, but will it corrode aluminum? Failing that, any other ideas? Thanks.

Thanks - I'm thinking that after the short term removal of the ice dam, the long term solution is a combination of increased attic insulation and heated cable along the edge of the shallow part. It's very shallow, so I suspect increased insulation alone won't solve it. Any idea where to buy clips for heated cable that can attach to aluminum shingles? The local big box stores only have clips for asphalt shingles. Or is there an adhesive I can use on aluminum shingles to attach clips? Any other suggestions?
