I have a 12 in 12 pitch standing seam metal roof with a 4" ridge cap that is taking in snow and leaking thru my fiberglass insulated, valted ceiling roof. The Mfg. Reclametal suggest I install a closed cell foam seal under the ridge cap or install a wider ridge cap 12" or so. My question is with the closed cell foam seal and sofit vents will the ventilation out the ends of the ridge cap be enough. The other question is with the wider ridge cap should I worry about insects like hornets building nests. This is a cabin in the rockies at 9500 feet elevation. Thanks for your help. Roger

Hello Roger, Thanks for your question. Normally, if this is a vented ridge, there would be a special ridge cap or detail which would allow air to exhaust but would not allow rain, snow, etc. to get in. It almost sounds to me like a standard ridge cap was put on but yet the tops of the panels were left entirely open. That is not appropriate. To answer your question, would trying to vent out the ends of the ridge cap be adequate? No, it wouldn't. And, furthermore, the ends of the cap should be closed anyway. If you wish, please email me at [email protected] with more details or even photos. You can also call me at 1-800-543-8938 ext 201. I will try to help you come up with a solution. Todd Todd Miller
