We are building a small over-door awning and would like to use standing seam metal panels instead of asphalt shingles. Are metal standing seam panels available retail and if so, is there any reason why we shouldn't do this small job ourselves?

Many home centers such as Home Depot, Lowes, and others do carry some through-fastened metal roofing panels, such as those that are seen a lot on barns. Generally, as long as the roof is not terribly complex, these could be self-installed. Be sure to request and obtain manufacturers' installation procedures though so that you do not do something that will void the warranty. Those types of panels are not really "standing seam" roofing even though many people lump all vertical seam panels into the same category. For a true standing seam, such as those seen on some commercial buildings as well as many homes, the typical distribution channel is through contractors who install them. I would encourage you, if you're going to invest in metal roofing, to thoroughly explore the Metal Roofing Alliance website and find the roofing style and type that will best meet your needs. Regardless of the type of roofing you choose, make sure that it is suitable for the type of roof pitch that you have. This can be an issue when dealing with porch roofs. I apologize for not responding sooner. Things have been pretty busy in metal roofing of late. Todd Miller
