Aprox 1700 sq ft cottage. Built on several times and maintained original roof line; result 3/12 pitch. Hard to get enough insulation to keep a cool enough roof in my area. Currently buile >1 ft ice dams and control with heat tape to drain. 3 layers of asphalt will come off and plan to do standing rib over best underlayment with hopes to shed snow/ice easier. Have heard of DIYers using 2 X 4's, sheet foam insulation, and plywood over original roof boards to create an 1 3/4 dead air space to cool the roof. Any info/suggestions, etc ??? Thanks !! Ack

I would definitely suggest insulation and a vented airspace above that followed by venting and the new roof.
