I am in the process of getting bids on a new metal roof overlaying my existing shingle roof that was damaged during hurricane Gustav. Some roofers recommend striping the old roof first and other say it is not necessary. What is your recommenation and why? Thanks, Jim P

It depends entirely on your exact situation and what type of roof is being installed. Generally, you can go over existing shingles but always consult with the manufacturer of your new roof.

Installing a metal roof over existing asphalt shingles is a common practice in Florida. Our company sells many MFG's products and they are all capable of this form of installation. There is some criteria that is recommended for this type of installation. 1. Some form of underlayment. Preferrably a peel & stick. 2. Structural integrity. The deckng and truss system free from rotten wood. I would be happy to discuss further with you the many different types of metal roof systems and what may be your best fit.
