metal roofs require insulation?

We have a redwood-glass style home in Santa Barbara and like the appearance of metal roofing. However, there is no insulation or space below our roof. Would a metal roof cause a lot of heat to the interior? Thanks.

Actually, there are ways through a combinatin of of the following: reflective pigment in the paint, light colors, airgap (perhaps even vented) between the metal and the roof deck, and/or insulatio -- for a metal roof to be a very "cool" roof in your situation.
