Todd,
I found you on the 'ask the expert' section of metal roofing alliance and had some questions concerning my purchase of a new metal roof. I hope you can help me.
1. What are the different types of paint finishes put on standing seam and corrugated metal roofing?
For instance, I have heard of Kynar finish, while it will last a long time, I hear it is hard to work on because it scratches easily?
2. When choosing a contractror, what type of paint finish warranty are you looking for?
3. Exposed fasteners on corrugated vertical panel metal roofing seems to be somewhat of an issue, what assurances should I get from my contractor that the neoprene washer that attaches screw to metal won't wear out?
4. Driving down my street, there are 4 metal roofs around the same age but differ greatly in the quality of the way they look, it seems that some weatheralot better than others, can you tell me why?
Thanks so much for your assistance,
Misty D. Perry

Todd- I would love to see your response to his questions. We are designing a lake house upstate NY and would like to use a metal roof but know little about it-- quality/thickness/metal composition/ etc.
Thanks for any help--

Thanks for your email Todd. I still didn't get any information on the following:
What are the different typoes of paint finishes on standing seam and corrugated metal?
When I am choosing a contractor what type of paint finish warranty can I expect?
Thanks,
Misty

The document I sent does address those questions but perhaps not as directly as it could. Sorry.
Anyone who wants that document can email me at [email protected]
Basically, there are four types of finishes:
Clear Acrylic
Acrlyic emulsion
Polyester (including modified and siliconized)
PVDF (aka Kynar or Hylar)
They are listed here in ascending quality.
Paint finish warranty has nothing to do with the contractor. It has everything to do with the panel you choose. Many finishes have peel flake chip warranties for from 20 - 50 years. Kynar and Hylar finishes typically have 30 year fade and chalk warranties.

I am looking at having a 5 v metal roof installed on my roof in Southern Florida. Code now requires I apply self adhearing rolled underlayment directly onto the deck. Lowes has a peel and stick product that has a shinny aluminum topping. Would this provide any radient quality advantages if the metal is installed directly to it? It is $10 more a square then the black stuff, I have about a 2100 SQ FT roof
