Metal Roof Ventilation

I have a pole barn type building with trusses making up the roof. The outer walls and roof are covered with 5 rib metal with a layer of insulation betweeen the metal and the wood lats. One side of the insulation is fiber glass the other side had a vapor barrier that is slick plastic. In side the building I have living space framed up that is heated and cooled. It is typical house construction with 2x4 walls, drywall, and insulation. The entire building sits on a concrete slab. One side of the building is my garage the other side is living space with attic type space above it. The garage and space above the living space are open where you can see the trusses from end to end of the building when standing in the garage. There is a ridge cap in place but it is sealed with a foam type material on the outside and the insulation seals the cap from view on the inside of the building. My question is: I am worried about the building not having any ventilation. There is absolutely no place that I can see where air can move out of the building. The garage and attic space get fairly warm during the summer time and my split unit HVAC unit is installed in between two trusses and all of my duct work extends down into the ceiling registers of the living space. I have a front and back garage door that I open when home, but leave closed when I am not. Is this ok for this type of construction not to have any type of roof ventilation or do I need to install roof vents. I also heat the garage and attic space with a wood burning stove in the winter time. The color of the metal is ash grey. If it needs to be vented can you recommend a product. Thanks

As long as the vapor barrier on the insulation is working, for this type of construction, that is hopefully adequate. Todd Miller

Would it be better to vent the building with a product like coravent, than to leave the building like it is without any ventilation in place?

If you have a way to feed air to the ridge vent, such as through soffit vents and air channels unobstructed by insulation, sure, ventilation would be good. I just sort of figured that was not possible. I am sorry if I misunderstood that. Folks are also welcome to call me -- 1-800-543-8938 ext 201 -- sometimes it is hard to give advice sight unseen long distance by typing. Todd Miller
