My home is ten years old and has a metal medium brown color roof. We decided to put a whole house fan in, but the contractor said our attic has "no Vents". He said we will need to install vents. Since then I have noticed that all the other metal roofs in our neighborhood seem to lack vents. Are attics covered with metal roofs vented differently than attics with shingles or shake tile roofs?

Proper venting requires intake and exhaust vents. Intake vents are typically eave soffit vents while a roof ridge vent makes a great exhaust vents.
On many metal roofs, a ridge vent looks no different than a standard ridge cap.
A great place to lean basics of ventilation is www.airvent.com
