How do I determine the grade, species, and spacing to use with purlins on trusses 5' on center. Steel roofing will be installed over the purlins

You do not wnat to use treated lumber. Other than that, all information must be based upon load tables and other details provided by the manufacturer of the roofing you install. Todd Miller

I would have assumed that treated purlins would be the way to go, but I guess not. By the way, I'm installing a steel roof over existing shingles. The existing roof is not leaking, but it is very, very old and I figured I had better replace it before it leaks. I am considering either using purlins or screwing it directly to the existing roof. Do you have any advice? The manufacturer says I can do it either way, but I'd appreciate your expert opinion.

If it is a panel that can be installed over battens then there may be some additional energy efficiency achieved with the battens. Todd Miller
