I am planning to install a metal roof on my log cabin. The existing roof is cedar shake possibly 50 years old. It seems the best way to re do the roof is to pull off the old shakes, install new plywood and then metal panels. I would like to know if there is a way to put metal panel on top of the shakes and if this method is recommended. The cabin is isolated and I would like to keep material transport to a minimum.

You could apply vertical strapping over the shakes and then either horizontal strapping or plywood on top of that, depending upon the exact metal panel you plan to install.
Depending upon the exact thickness of your shakes, some of the available aluminum or steel shakes could possibly be installed directly over.
