I have recently begun to get estimates for a new roof and am comparing the benefits & price of metal to shingle. Living in Florida, I am within 1 block of the bay. My local contractors are telling me that they can't warranty a metal roof because I am within 1 mile of salt spray. However, there are many metal roofs being put on houses all along the Gulf of Mexico.
Please explain why the manufacturer won't warranty and if I might need to look for another manufacturer.
Thank you.

A salt environement poses corrosion risks which do not exist in other areas. However, I can assure you that there are many metal roofs (steel, aluminum, copper, and other metals) which are designed and warranted for your application.
Use this website to find some products you like, contact the manufacturers, and get their information pertaining to warranties within one mile of salt coasts. In most cases with MRA member manufacturers, I believe you'll find that they are producing high quality corrosion resistant products which do not have warranty restrictions for your application.
