I am installing a metalroof over one layer of existing shingles. My plan is to install a layer of synthetic underlayment first. The decking is OSB and in good condition. Will the osb hold the screws sufficiently or would I need to install 1" x 4"'s first and then screw to those? Any advise is appreciated.

As long as the OSB is sound and there are no ventilation problems in the home, you should be fine. Not all metal roofing products by the way can be installed on 1 x 4 s. Todd Miller

I assume you are aware that that product is on the lower end of metal roofing in terms of ultimate durability. Todd Miller

Are you saying it has a lower durability due to the metal not being painted? The bare galvalume is the look I was wanting, I did not want the painted metal look.

If you are purchasing prime Galvalume Plus material (AZ55), and it is properly engineered and installed, it should perform as well as any other metal roofing product.

grayluke, You said bare gavalume and I believe that is what Todd is replying to. Ken made a reference to galvalume plus. You can get either one on the market. Galvalume plus is galvalume that has an acrylic coating (clear). As an installer the galvalume plus is a better material than the bare galvlaume. The acrylic coating helps protect the galvalume finish from minor scratches during installation. I know they say the galvalume is self healing but you still have a better product if it is coated.(the warranty is longer) [email protected]
