To what degree are the finish colors on metal shakes customizable? I don't generally like the colors that I see--they are too monochromatic to really imitate the color of wood. Also, what is the range of thickness for typical metal shakes? Thanks--

Most true shakes have a butt thickness of 1" or greater. Many manufacturers offer aggregate coatinges or premium paint finishes which are multi-hued and even texture. Do realize, though, that looking at something up close is different than from the curb. In other words, from the curb, it can be difficult to tell what the finish is. Some of the manufacturers to look into are Classic Metal Roofing, Gerard, and Metro. Todd Miller
