I am in the process of fixing up a 150 year old house. the metal roof on the house is in need of a good paint job. The last time it was painted the owner used alluminum roof paint with some sort of bituminous added. My question is, do I have to do anything extra when preping and cleanig tne roof and what type of paint would you recommend using?

I am not an expert in repainting like this but I would generally say the old paint needs to be removed. I would try power washing first and see what that does. You can also go to a quality paint store and explain your situation and see what they suggest.
