Standing Seam Installation

My mother is going to put insulation in the attic of her house which happens to be a standing seam roof. The house is almost a hundred years old and as of right now the roof panels sit directly on the roof joists. I thought perhaps the before insulation is installed that a vapor barrier should be installed in between what will be the new insulation and the roof panels. I am unfamiliar with the contruction methods of the standing seams roofs and am unsure of what needs to be accounted for technically speaking when insulation is installed. Thanks!
