I'm putting an open porch onto two older buildings. I wanted to use standing seem metal roofing. I know that you can install onto horizontal batons for standard applications, but what is suggested for a porch?
My goal is minimal framing, as the whole roof of this porch is mostly for shade and rain protection- It does not actually need to insulate.
At the same time, I still worried about wind loads and the whole thing buckling or breaking.
Do I need sheathing? Or can I attach the roof directly to a 2x4 frame? If I do use horizontal batons, what size and spacing do I need?

You first need to decide what type of roofing you want to use for the project. Then, decide what manufacturer you will purchase the material from. You can then ask the manufacturer for help in determining the spacing required to resist the wind loads.

There is a type of standing seam that goes over open framing. Just make sure you ask the manufacturer whether theirs does. With standing seam, you have more chance for oil canning (ripples in the panels) when installing over open framing.
