What is the basic purpose of a batten system under 5V-Crimp or standing seam? Ventalation, leveling or ??? Is it best to have or not have a batten system in this application?

Most manufacturers of 5V, for residnetial applications, now suggest installation over solid decking and appropriate underlayment. Battens can serve several purposes including those you mentioned. Choose a quality manufacturer and make sure the product is installed per their specifications. Todd Miller
