My husband and I have recently purchased a 120 year old farm home with the original metal roof. It has been very well maintained. It was painted about 12 years ago. There are some rust areas, primarily over the front porch. I am being told by 2 roofing contractors that the roof is not yet in need of replacement. Re-painting is recommended solution. I am also looking to change the color. My question is: Based on my research it seems that a elastomeric coating is a good choice as well as a kylar painting product (PPG). Based on my homes age, which technique do you recommend and why?
Thanks,
Jill

If you are just trying to protect it and change color, then paint will be fine. The elastomerics are more appropriate if there are cracks or rust holes that need plugged.
What a wonderful testimony to the life of metal roofing you have!

We are interested in using an elastomeric coating (EPDM) instead of paint for our roof. Would you recommend any particular manufacturer?
Also, We want to change the color of the roof to red. I have not found any information about how to incorporate this into the plan. Can you give us any info on how to do this?
