I was planning to put black roofing metal on my home but some people have lead me to believe that it will make the house harder to cool in the summer. Because black draws heat more than other colors. Is this true? Should I consider a different color for this reason?

Color is only one component of creating a "cool roof".
Some companies offer black with a reflective pigment for some decent reflectivity.
However, if you have a properly vented attic or if you choose a metal roof than can be vented or has an airgap between the metal and the roofdeck, that can be very beneficial as well ...
If you really want black, look for reflective black but make sure you have good ventilation (which is important regardless of color).
