I am wondering about the cost of roofing an approx. 1500 sq. ft. roof with two gables. What should I look for as far as pricing. I currently have a shingled roof an am trying to decide between metal or architect shingles.

Costs are going to vary greatly from one region to the next, as well as by style, gauge, coating, etc... Your best bet would be to contact a roofing contractor in your area, or the Pro Desk/Special Order department at a retailer such as Home Depot or Lowe's. They should be able to show you a variety of options, and give you a ballpark idea once you make a selection.

Metal will often run as a higher investment than shingles -- often 2 - 3 times the price. However, the paycak is over the long term in terms of durability and other benefits including increased resale value.

I had metal roof put on because the cost of a roof that lasts for seventy plus years versus a roof that lasts at the best thirty five years was about fifteen percent more. But the best part about it is that I am not puting petroleum on my roof and supporting outside sources.

I keep hearing this 2x3 times the cost of a regular roof, however, the quotes I am receiving from the couple of companies have been 800 to 1200 per 100sq. For my 3700 sq feet of roofing, this comes out closer to 5 to 6 times the cost of conventional roofing. My quote for shingles installed is $7,500 vs $37,000
When you take into account that I can lay my own shingles and most products will void warranty unless you pay their contractor to install, you end up closer to 10x the cost of roofing.
In addition to this, the only real sales pitch of the metal roof is the longevity. Look at the average time people are in their homes before selling, and tell me most people care about how long their roof will last.
I really want to install a metal roof, however, it seems that the industry is way over priced for what you are getting. Appraisers do not make a property value adjustment even close enough for the value to be there in the home.
If there are companies selling their top quality items in the 400 to 600 per 100sq range, I would be interested in it. (at the mentioned 2x3 times the cost of conventional roofing)
