new roof/rafters - need decking?

I bought an old house and the roof needs replacing including some rafter work. Since we are taking the roof all the way down to the rafters, I have been told that decking/felt does not need to be installed because that would cause the roof to sweat and rust. They said that there only needs to be decking in certain areas, not the whole roof. I live in the south (Alabama) where it is humid much of the year. There are two openings in the attic to allow for ventilation.

With no more ventilation than that, you'd better have decking and underlayment or you will have condensation problems. Regardless, though, I would increase the ventilation, which requires both intake and exhaust. Todd Miller
