I would like to have a metal roof put over my existing shingles. Neither contractor quoted 1X3 furring strips. Inquiries to the metal suppliers provided no help. One suggested using them, the other said it did not really matter. Help!! Does roofing felt go over the existing shingles before the metal? How effective is the foil bubble insulation?

Number of considerations. The building code calls for ventilation. If you have a vaulted ceiling then you must provide a 1" min vetically vented space which means strappping vertically and then horizontally. Check the product approval on the material selected as irt will explain how to fasten etc as you do need to meet the wind codes. The material you talk about relies on reflective properties of the foil and works best when it is minimum 1" away from the roof covering. If you have an attic, this is of little value. Choose an energy star roof covering to reflect the heat.
