My metal roof is less than one-year old. There is a big ice build up on two corners of the house and now water is seaping into my living room. My contractor said that on one side, where the leak is, it is an insulation problem, not a roof problem. I am hoping the contractor will at least clear the ice away. What can I do to prevent this until I can address the insulation situation.

I would suggest contacting the manufacturer of your roofing and seeking their expertise and guidance.

I have a closed beam cathedral ceiling with R40? worth of insulation between my pine ceiling and the 4x8 roofing panels. I had asphalt shingles with 'black joe'? [building paper] for 15 years after building. No problems. Last year I had steel panels attached directly to the roof. I was not advised that I needed to ventilate anything. Now my contractor says that there is condensation inside the roof causing many leaks and that the steel should be lifted and somthing called 'ice shield' [apparently a rubber type membrane?] installed and the steel reapplied. I will not be seeking redress from my contractor; it is most likely my mistake in using a local who was as ignorant as I am without seeking professional advice.. What is 'ice shield'? Is this a situation where the steel should have been mounted on vertical wooden ribs, allowing a ventilating flow of air from soffit to roof peak? or some other ventilation device? If so my new contractor could do that. This condensation/ventilation problem, if that is what it is, did not occur with the shingles; why with steel?

Ice shield is a self-adhering underlayment and depending upon what is going on here could actually make the situation even worse. Please call me weekdays 8 - 5 eastern time at 1-800-543-8938 ext 201 ... we will talk this through a bit and come up with some ideas for you to go forward. Todd Miller
