I have about 28 years old redwood shake roof and soon need to be replaced. I looked in to light weight tile roof but was told that it breaks when you need to walk on it. I looked in to metal roof, some people told me that it contains the fire and difficult to get thru for the fireman so they don't like it. I also looked in to asphalt singles which are available in 30, 40 and 50 years life. I am confused and could not decide which material to use for new roof. Colud you give some guidance and merits and demerits of each type of roof?

I really am unaware of steel roofing ever doing what you have heard of. Aluminum does have a lower melting point and could be considered as an option to steel. All metals are low weight in comparison to conventional roofing which is good. You might look at product warranties and paint finishes / coatings for comparison as well. Todd Miller
