I have been installing a metal roof on my house. The roof is a hip-roof with a 5-12 pitch. My question - I only have about 6 foot of available ridge for venting (8 foot total ridge). The house is roughly 34 x 42 feet located in Omaha, Nebraska. The company I purchased the roofing material from decided on the type and amount of venting which is 6 to 7 foot of ridge venting. I am installing the roof over a single layor of shingles. Now I am concerned that this is not enough venting for my roof. How much venting should my house have and what products could I use to increase venting? There is soffit venting for air intake.

Your roofing manufacturer may be able to help you with a design for a hip vent. Otherwise, you may wish to consider a powered exhaust fan near the ridge of the roof. Todd Miller

I was told by one metal roof contractor that it was not recommended putting an attic ventilator fan, due to increase risk in leaks. What are your recommendations. I am in South Louisiana.

Forgot to add that I had an inexperienced subcontractor install my blue metal roof incorrectly, resulting inr esulting in serious leaking. We are in the process of repairing the roof (and leaks) and have carefully taken off metal, then stripped the shingle roof off (to assess leak damage), re-felted then placed 1x4's and applied the metal to that. We are now unsure how to vent as we had had an exhaust fan on the old shingled roof. So as to my last comment or question, now that the roof (where the fan used to be) has been re-roofed w/ metal, and in the LVR and MBR there are cathedral ceilings - how can we vent the rest of the house without an exhaust fan? I have contacted the metal distributor and kept getting different answers each time. The roofers are not sure either as they usually only do shingles but were the only ones around willing to re-use my metal but not charge me a fortune to do the above job. I appreciate any help you can give me.

Sharon, I too was going to install attic (crawl space)fans. We live in East Texas so I know hot hot it gets in S. La. I listen to one of thoses "money pit " radio showes and heard that they are not that great because they tend to pull the A/C cooled air out of the house due to normal air leaks.I did some more research and come up with 80% say "no ". Only 20 % still say to use them. I decided not to Hope I was of some help. John

I did install eve vents. They are cheap and can be installed yourself. Just make sure you use a stick or something to move your insulation (throught the hole you cut in the eve)You want the air to be able to flow in. In don't hurt to clean the dust webs out of the vents in the spring. If they ain't to bad, I just hose them off. Just don't hit them to hard or long. You don't want to put water into you roof.

Any new openings in a building offer new opportunities for the elements to enter your home, but, if they are properly installed and sealed(caulked, etc) there shouldn't be a problem, and it will greatly help your home in the long run with regards to heat, moisture, mold, etc.
