Can you recommend a roofing approach that incorporates adding foam insulation on top of the sheathing and/or existing asphalt shingles that would allow adequate ventillation and give us additional insulation? The pitch of the roof varies. The lowest parts are 2/12. I have read earlier threads where you did not seem keen on metal roofing over foam insulation. Are there specific products you would recommend? We are in a rural area in the western NC mountains. I talked with a roofing company who said we would have to repair all leaks before they put the roof on. Isn't the point of the new roof to take care of any leaks?

There are panels available which incorporate foam and new decking and then have channels in them for ventilation. The trade name of one is Celo-Vent. You could also create your own version of this by including insulation, spacer boards, and new decking. Depending upon what type of roof you choose, you could maybe use spacer boards followed by horizontal purlins followed by roofing. As for fixing the leaks ... if there are substantial areas of rotted wood from the leaks, your roofer is wise by wanting to have those areas fixed. Todd Miller

Thank you for the Celo-Vent info. Would we then use something like ice shield on top of the Celo-Vent or would red resin paper be sufficient? (2/12 pitch in areas of concern) Should we put roofing felt under the red resin paper? We are in an area with a lot of rain and occasional snow.

You definitely would not use red rosin paper by itself. Either use it over felt or use an Ice and Watershield membrane. Local building code may dictate Ice and Watershield over eaves. Due to the marginal pitch, frankly, I would use it over the entire area I think. Todd Miller
