I will be reroofing my house this year and will going with a vertical steel roof. We are also considering installing solar panels on the southern pitch of the roof in the near future. Will there be a problem doing that? I am worried that the installers of the solar panels will have to drill through the metal and create leaks.

While preparing the roofing system to install the solar panel, contract with the roofing contractor to provide a water tight seal around the pipes being installed throught the metal roof. MOST roofing contractors will void any warrantee for your metal roof, if the penetrations are not repaired in a manner consistent with roofing standards.
The use of a solar panel is a wonderful idea, HOWEVER be sure to have the roofer who holds the warrantee on your roof aware of the schedule, and contracted to do the repairs. The plumber should not be allowed to do the job of a roofer!

First, I want to point out that in most cases the manufacturer's warranty does not cover weathertightness. That is the responsibility of the intaller. That is the case, really, with all building products.
Next, on a true standing seam product, you really want to avoid through fasteners. S5! Clips are available for attachment to most standing seam profiles without penetration.
I would also ask the solar panel manufacturer, as well as the roofing manufacturer, this question.

There is an interesting new solar product that is designed to be installed underneath your metal roof, using the metal itself to absorb and conduct heat. Therefore you would not need to have any additonal penetrations through your roof. There website is www.dawnsolar.com.

I am also planning to install solar PV and solar hot water systems on the south side of my new home on a standing seam metal roof. The solar company recommends the s5 clip. When I asked the weight I was told approx. 50 lbs. per panel. Will the seams and the s5 clips support the 50 lbs? Have these been widely used. I would really like to see some existing installations so that I will know that it really works. All advice is greatly appreciated.

I am interested in a standing seam metal roof but instead of panels I would live the solar PV's integrated into the roof. Where can I find such a product?
